New Testament Assembly Mango Valley
About Us
History
In 1974, the late Bishop J.E.C. Farrell conducted six weeks of crusade in the district of Mango Valley, St. Mary. At the end of the crusade, eleven persons were baptized—thus, NTA Mango Valley was born. The new congregation had no place of their own in which to worship and shared spaces with another congregation in the community. They eventually discontinued this arrangement and began to conduct services in the homes of the brethren.
Two years after its inception, Missionary P. Jackson (affectionately called “Sis Lou”) gave permission for a temporary structure to be erected at the front of her home. The structure, which was made of bamboo, was nicknamed “Bamboo Slipper.” The bamboo was later replaced by zinc, and the church was left in the care of Evangelist Eudalee Martin, who served for over thirty years until she retired due to ill health.
During the period of her tenure, the brethren requested of the Lord that He provide for them a permanent place of worship. Their prayers were answered—a portion of land was obtained and a new building erected through the hard work and dedication of the few members. The first service was held in this building in 2001. Since then, the building has undergone significant renovation and expansion and stands today as a beautiful edifice—a beacon of hope in the community.
In 2005, the baton was passed to Rev. Deon Reid, who continues to serve as leader of this congregation to date. The church has experienced varying degrees of successes and challenges; however, the brethren have remained faithful through it all.
We recognize the contribution of those who have gone before us—those who held on during trying times and positioned the church for its present growth. We look towards the future, holding on to the promises of God and positioning ourselves to experience more of His glory.
